HRSC Press Release #261 - Iani Chaos (orbit 0945)

On 14 October 2004 the High-Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) onboard the ESA spacecraft Mars Express obtained image data in orbit 945 with a ground resolution of approximately 13.0 metres per pixel. The data were acquired in the region of Iani Chaos, at approximately 0.7° southern latitude and 340.6° eastern longitude.

Iani Chaos is one of many regions east of Valles Marineris which are characterized by chaotic terrain. The morphology of this terrain is dominated by large-scale remnant massifs, which are randomly oriented and heavily eroded. To the south of the colour image, these mesas range from less than one kilometre to roughly 8 km wide, with a maximum relative elevation of approximately 1000 metres.
Vermutlich wurde das nordwestlich sich in Richtung Chryse Planitia erstreckende, 1500 km lange Ares Vallis durch Wasser geformt, das ursprünglich in Iani Chaos freigesetzt wurde. Die neuen hochauflösenden und farbigen Bilddaten der HRSC gestatten besonders an dieser Stelle neue Einsichten in die geologische Entwicklung des Mars.
The relatively flat region in the northwest of the image exhibits a number of faint, circular depressions. These depressions, along with the remnant massifs, may have formed by collapse of the surface due to the removal of underlying material, for example ice or water.
Many scientists believe that Iani Chaos was the source of the fluids thought to have created Ares Vallis, the roughly 1500 km long valley that extends to the northwest in the direction of Chryse Planitia. Therefore, the HRSC camera is particularly useful since it provides new image data for this region, ultimately improving our understanding of the geologic evolution of Mars.
The colour scenes have been derived from the three HRSC-colour channels and the nadir channel. The perspective views have been calculated from the digital terrain model derived from the stereo channels. The anaglyph image was calculated from the nadir and one stereo channel. The black and white high resolution images were derived form the nadir channel which provides the highest detail of all channels.
The High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) experiment on the ESA Mars Express Mission is led by the Principal Investigator (PI) Prof. Dr. Gerhard Neukum who also designed the camera technically. The science team of the experiment consists of 40 Co-Investigators from 33 institutions and 10 nations. The camera was developed at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) under the leadership of the PI G. Neukum and built in cooperation with industrial partners (EADS Astrium, Lewicki Microelectronic GmbH and Jena-Optronik GmbH). The experiment on Mars Express is operated by the DLR Institute of Planetary Research, through ESA/ESOC. The systematic processing of the HRSC image data is carried out at DLR. The scenes shown here were created by the PI-group at the Institute for Geological Sciences of the Freie Universitaet Berlin in cooperation with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Institute of Planetary Research, Berlin.
